Mgahinga Gorilla National park is Uganda’s smallest National park in Kisoro, the south western Uganda , bordering Rwanda to the East and Democratic Republic of Congo to the west with a size of 33.7km2. The park takes its name from “Gahinga” – the local word for the small piles of volcanic stones cleared from farmland at the foot of the volcanoes.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, is part of the Virunga Transboundry with three of the eight Virunga volcanoes oMount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo, all of which can be hiked in one day from the park headquarters.
This is home to Mountain Gorillas and also there are 76 mammal species recorded, including buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, golden monkeys. 115 bird species have been recorded, including Rwenzori turaco, crowned hornbill, yellow-billed kite and grey crowned crane.
As well as being important for wildlife, the park also has a huge cultural significance, in particular for the indigenous Batwa pygmies. This tribe of hunter-gatherers was the forest’s “first people”.

How to access Mgahinga Gorilla National park by road from Kampala (540kilometres) for an 8 to 9 hour drive via Kabale onto Kisoro. For those without private transport, there are daily bus transport services, which set off at 0700 hours. Once in Kisoro town, tourists can hike or take a special hire vehicle to the park gate.
How to Access Mgahinga Gorilla National park by flight. It is also possible to fly to Kisoro with Chartered / Scheduled Aerolink flights to Nyakabande Airstrip in Kisoro town from Entebbe International airport / Kajjansi.
