How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Actually Take?

One of the most common questions we receive from first-time trekkers is: how long will the trek take?

The honest answer is: we don't know exactly — and that uncertainty is part of what makes gorilla trekking so special.

The Unpredictable Nature of Gorilla Trekking

Mountain gorillas are wild animals. They move through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest according to their own rhythms — following food, responding to weather, and ranging across their territory as they see fit. On any given day, a gorilla family might be found within 30 minutes of the trailhead, or they might have moved deep into the forest overnight.

This means that the total duration of your trek — from setting off at park headquarters to returning — can range from as little as 2 hours to as long as 8 hours or more.

What Happens Before the Trek

On the morning of your trek, you arrive at park headquarters for a briefing. While you are being briefed, an advance team of trackers has already entered the forest before dawn. Equipped with GPS devices and radios, they follow the gorilla family from where they nested the previous night, tracking their movements and reporting back to headquarters.

By the time your group sets off, the trackers have usually located the gorillas and can guide your ranger to the right area of the forest — significantly reducing the time spent searching.

The Trek Itself

Once you enter the forest, the terrain varies considerably depending on which sector of Bwindi you are trekking in and where the gorillas are that day. You should be prepared for:

  • Steep, muddy trails — Bwindi's terrain is rugged, and the name "Impenetrable" is not an exaggeration
  • Dense vegetation — you may need to push through thick undergrowth
  • Rain — Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, and showers can arrive at any time of year
  • Variable altitude — the forest ranges from around 1,160 to 2,607 metres above sea level

Porters are available at the trailhead to carry your pack and provide physical support on difficult sections. We strongly recommend hiring one — they are experienced, invaluable on steep terrain, and their fee directly supports local livelihoods.

The Hour with the Gorillas

Once you find the gorilla family, you have exactly one hour with them. This time limit is strictly enforced by Uganda Wildlife Authority to minimise stress on the animals.

That hour is unlike anything else. Watching a silverback move through the undergrowth, observing a mother nurse her infant, or making eye contact with a juvenile who has wandered close — these are moments that stay with people for the rest of their lives.

"The excitement of seeing the gorillas makes it all worthwhile." — a sentiment we hear from almost every trekker who returns to the trailhead.

How to Prepare Physically

Given the potential for a long, demanding trek, physical preparation matters. In the weeks before your visit:

  • Walk regularly, including on hilly terrain if possible
  • Build up to walks of 3 to 5 hours with a daypack
  • Break in your hiking boots well in advance
  • Practice walking on uneven, slippery surfaces

You do not need to be an athlete — people of all fitness levels complete gorilla treks successfully every day. But the better prepared you are, the more you will enjoy the experience rather than endure it.

What to Bring

  • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirt (protection from nettles and insects)
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket
  • Gardening gloves (for pushing through vegetation)
  • At least 2 litres of water
  • Snacks and lunch
  • Camera (no flash)
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen

The trek is demanding, the outcome is uncertain, and the reward is extraordinary. That combination is exactly what makes gorilla trekking in Bwindi one of the great wildlife experiences on earth.
