Cost of a Gorilla Tracking Permit in Uganda

One of the first questions every prospective gorilla trekker asks is: how much does a gorilla permit cost in Uganda?

The answer is straightforward — but understanding what the permit covers, how the system works, and what to expect on the day of your trek will help you plan with confidence.

What Is a Gorilla Permit?

A gorilla permit is an official pass issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that grants you access to visit and observe a habituated mountain gorilla family in their natural forest habitat. Every traveller intending to trek gorillas must hold a valid permit — without one, no visitor is allowed into the gorilla zones, and no photography or filming is permitted.

How Much Does a Gorilla Permit Cost?

Standard Gorilla Trekking Permit

A single gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs USD 600 per person. This covers:

  • Entry to the gorilla trekking zone within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Assignment to a ranger guide who leads your group through the forest
  • One hour of time with a habituated gorilla family once located
  • Support from advance trackers who locate the gorillas before your group sets off

Gorilla Habituation Experience Permit

For a more immersive encounter, the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) permit costs USD 1,500 per person. This allows you to spend four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family alongside researchers and trackers — a far deeper and rarer experience than standard trekking.

What Is Not Included in the Permit Cost?

The permit covers your access and guided experience, but the following are not included:

  • Tips for guides, rangers, trackers, and porters — tipping is optional but appreciated as a sign of gratitude for the service provided. The amount, who to tip, and when is entirely your choice.
  • Porter fees — porters are available at the trailhead to carry your pack and assist on steep sections. Their fee is separate and typically around USD 15.
  • Accommodation and meals — you will need to arrange your own lodge near the park.
  • Transport — transfers to and from the park are not covered by the permit.

How Do I Get a Gorilla Permit?

Permits can be obtained directly from Uganda Wildlife Authority or through a licensed local tour operator such as ourselves. Booking through a local operator is often more convenient, as we handle the permit acquisition, logistics, and any changes on your behalf.

Permits sell out months in advance, particularly during peak season from June to September. We strongly recommend booking at least three to six months ahead to guarantee availability on your preferred date.

What Happens on the Day of Your Trek?

On the morning of your trek, all visitors gather at park headquarters for a briefing covering gorilla etiquette, safety rules, and what to expect in the forest. An advance team of trackers equipped with GPS and radios has already entered the forest to locate the gorilla family. Once found, they relay the location back to headquarters, and your ranger guide leads your group directly towards the gorillas — saving time and energy.

Your group will spend one hour with the gorilla family. The experience is extraordinary — watching silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles go about their daily lives in the ancient forest is something that stays with you for a lifetime.
